Thoughts: Shifting emotions in business and in life

Thoughts: Shifting emotions in business and in life

Emotions are many times defined as mental reactions that may be followed by strong feelings. These feelings may cause physical effects and cause us to overreact, shut down and may hinder our capability to make good decisions.  Many times we may witness changes in others, or feel changes in our own bodies. For example: our heart rate might increase, breathing might be shallower and facial expressions might dramatically change.  According to the cognitive appraisal theory, emotions are judgments about the extent that the current situation meets our goals. I would add that we react many times when the situation does not meet our needs or expectations.

It is important to be aware that there are emotions that shut down the brain. This fact alone hardly assists us in making important decisions in business or in life. It is also very helpful to recognize what triggers strong emotions in others, as that will also affect how they respond to you, or to any given situation.

Learning how to anticipate and shift emotions is a great skill that needs practice and a lot of awareness: self-awareness and awareness of those around us.

Here are my top recommendations:

  1. Breathe. Regardless of what happens, practice to not react immediately. Breathe deeply.

  2. Think before you speak. Language is powerful and its impact lasting.

  3. If possible, change your focus or those of others. That does not necessarily mean avoiding the situation, just simply seeing in a different light.

  4. Remember that emotions can be controlled. It is a decision and a muscle we build.
